LETTER FROM THE PUBLISHER/EDITOR OF STREET MAGAZINE

Rising Tide Raises All Boats
November
18,
2005
Hello,
Ogden!
We
are releasing this special edition of STREET News to inform you about
the upcoming Ogden City Council meeting on the proposed financing for
the Ogden High-Adventure
Recreation Center. The city council votes on this matter
November
22. This is a pivotal issue for the city's future economic
well-being.
Street Magazine supports the proposal and encourages all readers in
favor of the High-Adventure Center to voice their support to the City
Council.
To
make it easy for you to show your support, Steve
Larsen has set up an online electronic petition. The link to
the
petition is included in his letter, below this introduction.
The ipetitions web site tends to get overwhelmed with Internet traffic
so as an alternative you can print out a quick letter we've made
available as a word
document
or html
web page.
Please print out the letter, fill in the blanks and mail the
letter to us at:
Editor
c/o Street Magazine
2212 Washington Blvd.
Ogden UT 84401
We'll bring everyone's letter to the City Council meeting on the 22nd.
You can also e-mail your support to editor@streetmagazine.net
(your e-mail address will serve as your electronic signature)

Letter
to Ogden Citizens, from Steve Larsen
|
Dear
Friends:
If
you have not already done so, please sign the petition in support of
the High Adventure Recreation Center.: DO IT RIGHT NOW, PLEASE !!!
http://www.ipetitions.com/campaigns/supporthereccenter/
It
is only a small portion of the mall, but will make all the rest more
marketable and successfull.
To
paraphrase Shakesphere, "There is a
tide in the affairs of Ogden, which, taken at the flood, leads on to
fortune; omitted, all the voyage of its future is bound in shallows and
in miseries."
Sincerely,
Steve Larsen

While the local "adults"
are
busy insulting each other in the op ed pages of the Standard Examiner
over the proposed Recreation Center, gondola, Intelligent Design and of
course—the war—what are our local youth doing and
thinking in their "spare time?"
According to one worried
citizen during the last Ogden city council meeting-- Ogden teens might
decide to loiter around the new Recreation Center, heaven forbid,
wanting to actually use
the facility [—gee, that would be terrible.]

Letter
to the Editor

Dear
Editor,
It
should come as no
surprise that as a business owner and
property owner in downtown Ogden that I am
thrilled by the High Adventure Rec. Center in particular, and
even more,
the overall plan to develop Ogden’s
potential as a significant recreation center in the west. The city is
uniquely
blessed with mountains, canyons and two beautiful natural rivers
flowing on
both sides of the city. The rec. center mirrors and augments the
recreational
opportunities of the area in a useful and affordable year round format
and central
location.
One
has only to look at the success Ogden had in seeding 25th
street with a
beautiful
rehabilitated building using city funds which were repaid when the
building was
sold. The response from the business community was a miracle as the
character
and utility of the street was resurrected. This is a time of great
opportunity and
requires a city government with courage and foresight. Previous
administrations
stood by impotently as Nordstrom’s was allowed to vacate our
city
when
they really wanted to stay and improve their outlet, if the city would
have
been proactive towards the mall. Don’t let fear paralyze you
and
our city
dear city council members. Have the courage to complete the job that so
much
work and effort have been poured into. Vote for Ogden’s
future.

Recreation
Center Facts:
|
- Ogden must
create something unique so people will
WANT to go visit our city. The rec. center will include
Gold's
Gym, Fat Cat's bowling, an arcade, a wind-tunnel (for indoor skydiving
year-round - ages 3 and up), a flowrider (a water feature that combines
surfing with skateboarding), a climbing wall, restaurants, and more.
- The rec. center
is NOT the entire Mall Project.
It is only a small piece of the puzzle, but a very important
piece. The rec. center takes up approx. 24,000 square feet
out of
20 Acres of land. That's less than 3% of the entire mall area.
- The rec. center
will provide more than 200 NEW JOBS
to downtown Ogden!
- The rec. center
will draw AT LEAST 600 - 1,000 people
per DAY to the downtown. This will help current business
owners
and will encourage other business to come to the Ogden area.
What
business owner wouldn't want a guaranteed 600 - 1,000 people
going by their business everyday?
- Larry Miller has
agreed to build a theater complex in
the Mall Area ONLY if the rec. center is built.
- The Boyer
Company has agreed to develop part of the
project and to provide anchor stores and other retail ONLY if the rec.
center is built.
- The land already
purchased by private entities to
develop a three-story mixed-use building and a six-story mixed-use
building was purchased with the agreement that the city would build the
rec. center.
- If the city does
not build the rec. center the Mall
Project does not happen. We will still have a big dirt pit
sitting in the middle of downtown.
- Nationwide,
urban renewal projects have required some
funding from city sources. The results have shown
success.
The cities provide the spark to attract private business where no
interest existed.
- The rec. center
is a result of careful study of what
has been successful for urban renewal projects, months of input from
citizens during many, many open forums, and a cooperation between
developers and the city.
- The citizens of
Ogden are NOT responsible for paying
back the loan to build the rec. center. The loan is bonded
through revenue from the BDO, which means the loan, if defaulted on,
would be paid back through BDO. NOT TAX DOLLARS!
